Light a candle
Upon entering an Orthodox Church, the first thing people do is take a candle and then light it in the designated spot. Before lighting the candle, Orthodox Christians will offer a prayer to God on behalf of those for whom the candle is offered. After lighting their candle, the faithful will proceed to the icons in the narthex and venerate them before entering the nave (main body of the church).
The offering of candles carries a deep symbolism. Orthodox Christians are taught that candles symbolize the Light of Christ. In the Bible, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). Orthodox Christians believe that without Jesus, the world would be in darkness. He came to the world to die on the cross to save the world from sin and death.
By lighting a candle, Orthodox Christian not only remember, but confess that Jesus is the light of the world.
Besides the narthex candles are used in other places throughout the church. These include in the sanctuary, on the holy altar and during baptism. Candles are also used during personal prayer in the home. Regardless of where they are used, candles represent the Light of Christ.
“I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12
