Before the lockdown, our very own Dr Mario Baghos presented a copy of his book, 'From the Ancient Near East to Christian Byzantium: Kings, Symbols, and Cities' -- published earlier this year via Cambridge Scholars Publishing -- to our parish priest, the Very Revd Fr Athanasios Giatsios, as a sign of gratitude for the latter's support and friendship. We are pleased to share this video with you, which was recorded by Eirini Alligiannis in front of our icon of Sts Constantine and Helen in a very symbolic way. This is because Dr Baghos' book addresses the role of religion and kingship in cities culminating in Constantinople, which was founded by St Constantine. It also analyses the overturning of the ruler cult -- the worship of emperors as gods -- by Christ, which is not only, as mentioned in the clip, reflected in images of Christ as Pantokrator; but, as stated in the book, results also from the Christianisation of the Roman Empire, a process initiated by Constantine (and Helen) under Christ's providence. Many thanks to Eirini for the recording and Fr Stephanos Tinikashvili for taking the time to make the effects on the vid. Enjoy!
