Father Panagiotis (Peter) Mavrommatis was born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria. He moved to Sydney in 1994 to study Theology at St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College where, in 1998, he graduated with a Bachelor of Theology. He received the degree of Master of Education (with Merit) from the University in Sydney in 2005 and a Graduate Diploma in Education (Christian Education) from the Wesley Institute in 2011. He taught Religion and other courses at Saint Spyridon College High School from 1998 until 2011. From December 2011, he served as Assistant Priest at Saint Euphemia in Bankstown while teaching Religion at Saint Euphemia College. He served as Principal of Saint Euphemia College from October 2019 until October 2023. Currently, he is College Chaplain at Saint Euphemia College.
Fr Panagiotis was ordained to the Holy Diaconate by Archbishop Stylianos of blessed memory, on the 26th of June 2011 at Saint Spyridon, Kingsford. On the 9th October of the same year, he was ordained Presbyter by His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis at Saint Stylianos, Gymea. On the 24th of March, 2017, he was elevated to the dignity of Economos and Confessor by Archbishop Stylianos. Fr Panagiotis was elevated to the dignity of Protopresbyter by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia on the 9th of May, 2019, at the Cathedral of the Annunciation. He was elevated to the dignity of Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios on Sunday 23rd of May, 2021, at the Cathedral of the Annunciation.
Father Panagiotis has served on numerous boards tasked with the organisation and development of curriculum for the teaching of Orthodox Studies in the Greek Orthodox Day Schools and beyond.
He has presented at various forums and symposia on Christian Education and is a regular speaker at youth and adult fellowships of our Holy Archdiocese.
Since his appointment to Saint Catherine, he has focussed on the rejuvenation of our parish ministry to the youth, the restoration of the church and the long term plan to build a multi-purpose hall for the pastoral needs of the parish. Father Panagiotis is married to Presbytera Panayiota (nee Antoniou). They have three children – Yianna, Andrea and Catherine.
